It has VGA built on the adapter. In a system where it comes standard, but is still an adapter, it uses the Base Video Extension (BVE) slot. Through this, it provides VGA POST signals, text, and lower graphics to the rest of the system. This adapter is supported on all Micro Channel PS/2's except: 50, 60, and P70. It will not physically fit in a Auxillary Video Extension (AVE) slot. It can be installed in either a 16-bit or a 32-bit slot. XGA-2 is a 32-bit, busmastering graphics adapter capable of 1360 X 1280, interlaced and 1104 X 828, non-interlaced. It has VGA built on the adapter. In a system where it comes standard, but is still an adapter, it can use the Base Video Extension (BVE) slot. Through this, it can provide VGA, text, and lower graphics to the rest of the system. This adapter is supported on all Micro Channel PS/2's except: 50,60. XGA/XGA-2 ADAPTER INSTALLATION: XGA/XGA-2 Adapter: Requirements: (1) XGA/XGA-2 Adapter Card (2) XGA Startable Option Diskette (3) System Reference Diskettes, if your system does not have an IML partition. Ex: C:\md DIFINST (4) Copy all the files in the DIFINST directory on your A: drive to your C: drive DIFINST directory. Ex: C:\Copy A:\DIFINST\*.* C:\DIFINST (5) Go into your DIFINST directory on your C: drive and type DIFINST. Ex: C:\cd DIFINST C:\DIFINST\DIFINST (6) This should bring up the DMQS Display Information File Installation Program Main Menu so that you can install it again. If you are still having problems, be sure to go into "Change XGA Display Configuration Profile" to verify that the system is setup for the correct monitor. If it is an incorrect monitor, press F2 to change display type. Highlight the appropriate display and press Enter. Then, press Enter again to accept the setup. F3 to exit and 7 to return to DOS. NOTE: You can install the DMQS for XGA2 and XGA, but only select a monitor if you have an XGA-2 adapter. XGA/XGA-2 DEVICE DRIVER INSTALLATION: NOTE: Before installing device drivers for XGA-2 Adapter, follow the DMQS Installation procedure and verify that this statement is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT: SET DMQSPATH=C:\XGA$DMQS Then, verify that if a network card is installed it is in a separate memory range from the XGA-2 Adapter. For example, if the XGA2 card is taking up DE000 - DFFFF, set the network adapter to an address in the C0000 range. And if XGA-2 is built into the system board and the customer is running EMM386, be sure to exclude the Video ROM Address Space in the EMM386 line of the CONFIG.SYS. You can locate the Video ROM Address to exclude by looking under view configuration in the reference diskette under built in features. For example, if the Video ROM Address Space is DE000-DFFFF in the reference diskette, the EMM386 CONFIG.SYS statement should appear like this: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=DE00-DFFF NOEMS After ensuring the above note, you are now ready to install the drivers. AutoCAD Trouble Shooting Hints: (1) When executing step (5) or step (6), if the TurboDLD-Lite does not show up in the list of devices to choose from perform the following steps. (A) Determine the name of the directory in which AutoCAD is installed. By default it takes the directory name of "ACAD". (B) Under the "ACAD" directory (or whatever directory name AutoCAD was installed in) there is a subdirectory called "DRV". Copy the files from the "\TURBODLD" subdirectory to the "\ACAD\DRV" subdirectory. Type "COPY C:\TURBODLD\*.* C:\ACAD\DRV" and press Enter. Be sure to substitute the proper drive names if AutoCAD or TurboDLD is installed on drives other than C. (C) Now start over with the reconfiguration of AutoCAD. The driver name should now show up in the list of choices. (2) If AutoCAD starts up and the screen is garbled looking or the screen did not sync properly, first ensure that the DMQS files are properly installed and the correct display is chosen from the list. If the DMQS is properly installed, be sure to exclude the XGA/XGA-2 ROM address range on the EMM386 line in the CONFIG.SYS. (A) First boot the Reference Diskette or the System Partition and "View the Configuration". Under "View Configuration" write down the memory address range that the XGA/XGA-2 card ROM is occupying. The address range should be something like "D800-D9FF". (B) Now reboot to DOS and bring the CONFIG.SYS file up into the editor by typing "EDIT CONFIG.SYS" and press Enter. (C) Find the line that says "DEVICE=C:........\EMM386.EXE" (D) Change this line to read: "DEVICE=C:\...........\EMM386.EXE x=AAAA-BBBB" (Where AAAA-BBBB is the ROM address range of the XGA/XGA-2 card.) (E) Now save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS and reboot the system. XGA VESA BIOS EXTENSION TSR The XGA VESA BIOS Extensions allow the XGA/XGA-2 card to be VESA compliant for SVGA applications or VESA compliant for XGA applications. The VESA BIOS extension is a TSR (Terminate Stay Resident) program also known as a memory resident program. There are 2 separate VESA BIOS extensions: SVGAVESA.COM is a TSR VESA extension that makes the XGA/XGA-2 card VESA compliant for SVGA XGAVESA.COM is a TSR VESA extension that makes the XGA/XGA-2 card VESA compliant for for XGA (1) To install the XGA VESA BIOS extensions, insert the XGA Device Drive diskette into the A diskette drive. (2) At the C:\ prompt type "MD XGAVESA" and press Enter. This will create a subdirectory on the C drive called XGAVESA. (3) Now at the C:\ prompt type "COPY A:\VESA\*.* C:\XGAVESA" and press Enter. This will copy the driver files from the A diskette drive to the new subdirectory that was just created. Therefore, applications that try to update the VGA video DAC via direct hardware writes instead of using BIOS INT10 calls will fail. Also applications that attempt to wait for a VGA-style vertical retrace signal will lock up the system. (4) SVGAVESA TSR supports all of the VESA calls defined in the VESA SuperVGA standard VS911022-2 (dated 20/Oct/91) on XGA/A and XGA-2 adatpers except: Function 01h - Return Super VGA mode information D2 - Output functions supported in BIOS. Output functions will not be supported This does not mean that Function 01h is not supported, but only that the BIOS does not support output functions like TTY output, scroll, pixel output, etc.. WINDOWS 3.1 DEVICE DRIVER INSTALLATION: The XGA Device Driver diskette contains device drivers for Windows 3.1 only. We do NOT ship drivers for Windows 3.0 anymore, but they are available on the NSC BBS. Before installing the Windows 3.1 XGA device drivers please complete the next 2 steps. (1) Ensure that DMQS is installed properly and that the SET DMQSPATH statement is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (2) Eliminate possible "Video Device Conflict" errors with expanded memory managers like EMM386.EXE on systems that have XGA/XGA-2 integrated onto the planar. These systems are the Model 8590, Model 9556, and the Model 9557. If you have one of those systems and the EMM386.EXE driver is in your CONFIG.SYS file, please perform the following steps. (A) Boot to the system partition and select "Set Configuration" from the main menu. (B) When the "Set Configuration" menu appears, select "View Configuration" (C) Page down to the XGA features and write down the ROM address that the XGA/XGA-2 is using. Example CB00-CDFF (D) Reboot the system back to DOS. (E) Bring the CONFIG.SYS file up into the editor by typing "EDIT CONFIG.SYS" at the C:\ prompt and press Enter (F) Go to the line that says "DEVICE=..........\EMM386.EXE" (G) Add "x=AAAA-BBBB" to that line where AAAA-BBBB is the address that the XGA/XGA-2 ROM is using. Example "DEVICE=...\EMM386.EXE x=CB00-CDFF" (... = path and drive) (H) Save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS file and reboot the system for them to take affect. This procedure excludes the ROM that XGA/XGA-2 uses from the expanded memory manager. To install the XGA/XGA-2 device drivers for Windows perform the following steps. This installation assumes that Windows 3.1 is already installed. If Windows 3.1 is not already installed, please perform the standard installation for Windows. (1) If Windows is running, exit Windows to a DOS prompt and change to the Windows subdirectory. (2) Once in the Windows subdirectory, type "SETUP" and press Enter. This will start the Windows Setup utility and brings up the following screen. XGA/WINDOWS 3.1 DRIVER INSTALLATION FOR NETWORKS: Installation for the XGA/XGA-2 device drivers for Windows 3.1 when Windows is being loaded across a local area network (LAN) can be confusing and difficult if you do NOT understand how the user's network is configured and what drives and subdirectories are being used. Please read and understand the "Before You Start" section before performing the installation. Before You Start: Before we can begin the installation, we must have the answers to the following questions: 1. What network drive letter and subdirectory is Windows installed on the server? We will refer to this as the windows source directory. 2. Windows creates some INI files that holds each individual users colors, resolutions, and desktop setup. What driver letter and subdirectory will these INI files be stored? This can be the local hard drive or a private user directory on the network. We will refer to this as the INI source directory. During Part 1 of the installation, the user logged onto the network, who will be performing the installation, must have complete read, write, and create access to the network windows source directory and the INI source directory. This installation assumes that Windows is already installed on the network server. If Windows is not install on the server, please have the user contact Microsoft to assist them in that part of the installation. Once Windows is installed on the server, we can then assist the user in installing the XGA/XGA-2 drivers. In the examples we are going to use the following assumptions: windows source directory = W:\WINDOWS INI source directory = F:\PRIVATE Part 1 Part 1 of the installation only needs to be performed ONCE!!! This can be done from any workstation but only do it ONE time. (1) Start the workstation and get logged onto the network and return to a DOS prompt. (2) Insert the XGA Device Drivers diskette into the A drive. (3) First we need to expand and copy all the files from the A:\WINV31 directory to the windows source directory. Type "W:\WINDOWS\EXPAND A:\WINV31\*.* W:\WINDOWS" and press Enter. Remember to replace "W:\WINDOWS with the windows source directory for your network setup. This command may take a little time to complete. Once it completes you will be returned to the DOS prompt. (4) Make the network drive that Windows is installed on the current drive. In our situation type "W:" and press Enter. (5) Now change directories into the subdirectory that Windows is installed on. In our case type "CD WINDOWS" and press Enter. (6) Now we need to rename the OEMSETUP.INF file to the proper name. First perform a directory command by typing "DIR OEM*.INF" and press Enter. (7) If the command returns "No files found", the just rename the OEMSETUP.INF file by typing "REN OEMSETUP.INF OEM0.INF" and press Enter. If files are found, then rename the OEMSETUP.INF file to the next incremental value. If OEM0.INF and OEM1.INF exists rename OEMSETUP.INF to OEM2.INF. Now Part 1 of the installation is complete. Part 2 Part 2 of the installation MUST be performed on each workstation that has XGA or XGA-2 installed. (1) Install DMQS to the local hard file. (2) Make the INI source directory the current drive and directory. In our case the INI source directory was "F:\PRIVATE" so type "F:" and press Enter to change to the F drive. Now type "CD\PRIVATE" and press Enter to change to the PRIVATE subdirectory. (3) Now from the F:\PRIVATE prompt type "W:\WINDOWS\SETUP /n" and press Enter. Remember to replace "W:\WINDOWS" with the windows source directory for you network setup. This will bring up the Windows Setup utility and the screen will look as follows. ЫиииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииииЌ Г Windows Setup Г Г ============= Г Г Г Г If your computer or network appears on the Hardware Г Г Compatibility List with an asterisk next to it, press Г Г F1 before continuing. Requirements for Windows 386 Enhanced Mode 80386 or higher processor 256K free conventional memory XMS driver installed (himem.sys) 1024 free extended memory Check Installation of XGA/XGA-2 1. If the machine is an xx56, xx57, or 8590 then check for the memory exclusion of the XGA/XGA-2 ADAPTER ROM. See "SAMPLE CONFIG.SYS 2" on next page. 2. Check for hardware conflicts. In reference diskette make sure that no other adapter is using memory that is next to the ROM ADDRESS RANGE of the XGA/XGA-2 card. If this condition exists, then separate the memory addresses as far as possible. Do this in the CHANGE CONFIGURATION. NOTE: When in the reference diskette, write down the location of the XGA/XGA-2 ADAPTER ROM for later use. If running the machine on a NETWORK, then set the TOKEN RING CARD INTERRUPT (IRQ) to 3. 3. Verify proper DMQS installation. Check for XGASETUP.PRO (XGA-2 Only) This file is contained in the XGA$DMQS subdirectory on the harddrive. This file containes in "TEXT" format the information about which display is being used. This file can be used using the DOS "edit" command. If the information found in this file is incorrect, then reinstall DMQS. If not found then reinstall the DMQS, making sure that you select the correct display. If you get errors while trying to do this, then rename the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT when installing the DMQS. After this is completed successfully, rename these files back to their original state. If Windows still does not function, continue with the following steps: Create the following base configuration files for DOS and Windows. Do this by REMing out all of the lines in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. See SAMPLES below. CONFIG.SYS *****************SAMPLE CONFIG.SYS 1************************** DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS REM DEVICE=SEVER.EXE ************************************************************** This is also the only driver that needs to be loaded for troubleshooting purposes. NOTE: If we have XGA/XGA-2 on the planar (xx56, xx57, or 8590) then we need to add one more line. The CONFIG.SYS in this case should look like this. *****************SAMPLE CONFIG.SYS 2*************************** DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=YYYY-ZZZZ NOEMS *************************************************************** Where YYYY-ZZZZ is the ROM ADDRESS RANGE of the XGA/XGA-2 card, which can be located in the "View Configuration" of the reference diskette. AUTOEXEC.BAT *******************SAMPLE AUTOEXEC.BAT************************* SET DMQSPATH=C:\XGA$DMQS *************************************************************** This is the only statement required for Windows drivers to locate the XGA/XGA-2 files. If Windows now runs, then add back lines 1 at a time to the CONFIG.SYS and then AUTOEXEC.BAT until Windows fails again. When Windows fails, then you have found the conflict and you should remove this line, or find a suitable substitute. PROBLEMS STILL If Windows is still not working, then it is possibly a hardware problem. Most likely something is wrong with the memory. If the caller is a dealer, have him run diagnostics, or if an enduser, have the machine serviced. NOTE: If the customer has another machine of the same type with Windows working, then swap the hard drive in these machines. If Windows still does not work, then there is definitely a hardware problem. GENERAL XGA INSTALLATION AND PROBLEM DETERMINATION TIPS: (1) Always ensure that the customer is working with the latest version of the XGA Device Driver diskette. The latest version is 2.11. (2) If the device drivers fail to install or the system does not come up in high resolution, ensure that the hardware is functioning properly by running the Advanced Diagnostics on the XGA/XGA-2 card. If these diagnostics pass, the hardware is fine and you have device driver installation problem. (3) When using Windows or AutoCAD release 12 and EMM386 make sure that you resolve video device conflicts by excluding the memory range that the XGA/XGA-2 ROM uses from the expanded memory manager. (4) The OS/2 2.0 device drivers for XGA/XGA-2 are in the Service Pack if the user has original ship level OS/2 2.0. The XGA/XGA-2 device drivers come standard in the OS/2 2.00.1. The OS/2 device drivers make use of the DMQS (version 2.02) so ensure that DMQS is properly installed. If problems occur with OS/2, load newer drivers. Make sure they are loaded correctly. (5) Do NOT load the DOS Adapter Interface device driver if you are using Windows. The DOS Adapter Interface drivers are not supported in OS/2 to run XGA resolution in a DOS full-screen, or DOS-window. (6) How to obtain the latest XGA/XGA-2 device drivers: 1. Call the IBM PC Company BBS at (919) 517-0001. The BBS is available 24 hours a day. Download XGA211.DSK and LDF.COM. Run LDF to create the LOADDSKF.EXE program. Then run "LOADDSKF XGA211.DSK A:" to create the driver diskette. 2. Call Compuserve and access the IBM Hardware Forum (GO IBMHW). (7) OS/2 1.3 with the latest CSD supports XGA/XGA-2. However, you will not be able to get ISO compliant fonts. You can load newer XGA-2 drivers over the top of the CSD level drivers. (8) OS/2 2.1 come standard with XGA/XGA-2 drivers. The released version is comparable to version 2.02 of the XGA drivers. You can load newer XGA drivers over the top of the OS/2 2.1 drivers. XGA/XGA-2 ERROR CODES (1) If you get a message Error: Can not find file XGARING0.SYS upon bootup of OS/2, you need to totally reinstall OS/2. (2) 024318XX -- With the new revision of the XGA-2 card (without a heat-sink on the processor chip), you may experience a 024318xx error during the general function test of the XGA advanced diagnostics. This is NOT a hardware failure, as indicated by the callout. There is an incompatibility between the diagnostic program and the microcode on the new processor chip on the XGA-2 card. The solution is to download the new XGA-2 Option Diskette from the BBS (XGA2ADP.DSK). This contains the new version of the diagnostic for the XGA-2 card. After updating IML, insure that you then backup the IML. If the error shows up during post, or if there are problems during the operation of the system, replace the XGA-2 card first. Then if the problems persist, do the above procedure. (3) 024374xx-- Copy an option has not successfully completed. Copy XGA-2 Display Adapter/A option diskette to the backup copy of the system programs/Reference Diskette; then run auto-configuration. This is an application problem NOT an XGA/XGA2 driver problem. The application did not query the Font size and provide enough space for the font. However, the selection of the Large Font or Small Font may correct the problem. 2. Codeview under Windows corrupts the screen and eventually fails. This is a CodeView problem - NOT an XGA/XGA2 driver problem. 3. The XGA/XGA-2 card cannot be used as a replacement for the 8514/A adapter when running CodeView for Windows on a PS/2 due to CodeView problems. 4. Switching to a full screen DOS session while printing from a Windows application can cause information to be omitted from the printout. To avoid this problem, wait for the dialog box informing you that the file is being sent to the printer to be removed from the screen, before switching to the DOS session. Alternatively, run DOS in a window and the problem will not occur. 5. Screen print using the "Print Screen" key is not possible. 6. A few applications can give different colors when run on the XGA/XGA-2 adapters as compared to VGA. This results from different color pallette formats. 7. Windows Setup Hangs Correct by editing the .INI files with the Windows notepad editor, and erase the single character black rectangle at the end of the 2 files. SETUP will then work correctly. 8. Video Device Conflict Error Expanded Memory Manager may incorrectly attempt to use XGA memory mapped registers for its memory management. a. Run Ref Disk (IML) and use Display Memory Map to Identify memory area reserved for the XGA adapter (may list as installed devices). b. Modify CONFIG.SYS to exclude the memory addresses used by the XGA from the memory management program. ex. DEVICE = EMM386.EXE X = C600-C7FF (Where C600-C7FF are the addresses used by the XGA adapter) 9. Support for the driver escape function SetColorTable has been removed (since driver version 1.2). This is for the Windows 3.0 device drivers. 10. A screen corruption problem can occur in Windows if another device driver is conflicting with the XGA. To check this, rename the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, and create another CONFIG.SYS with only the line DEVICE = HIMEM.SYS VISUAL SUBSYSTEM COMPARISONS S=Supported N=Not Supported I=ISO Compliant Capable Monitor VGA SVGA XGA XGA-2 Image/A Image/I 8503 S S S S S N 8504 S S S S S N 8506 N N N N S N 8507 S S S S S N 8508 N N N N S N 8512 S S S S S N 8513 S S S S S N 8514 S S S S S N 8515 S S S S S N 8516 S S S S S N 8518 S S S S S N 9507 N N N * N N 9515 N I N I N N 9517 N I N I N S 9518 S S S S S N 9524 S S S I S I 9525 S S S I S I 9521 S S S I S I 9527 S S S I S I * Only on E-Machine and a few other systems. Install DMQS by going to a DOS fullscreen and typing: A:INSTALL (follow standard procedures for the DMQS installation) 2. Go to the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM Directory. Copy all XGA*.FON files to 8514*.FON one at a time by typing: Copy XGAOEM.FON 8514OEM.FON Copy XGAFIX.FON 8514FIX.FON Copy XGASYS.FON 8514SYS.FON 3. Expand the Windows 3.1 drivers from the XGA/XGA-2 Device Driver Diskette by typing the following from within the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM directory: A:\EXPAND A:\WINV31\XGA21x.DRV XGA21x.DRV A:\EXPAND A:\WINV31\XGACONF.CPL XGACONF.CPL A:\EXPAND A:\WINV31\XGACONF.HLP XGACONF.HLP 4. Copy the XGAMSG.GML file from the Device Driver Diskette to the same directory by typing: COPY A:\WINV31\XGAMSG.GML 5. Change to the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 directory and edit the SYSTEM.INI file: Change the line that says DISPLAY.DRV=XGA.DRV to DISPLAY.DRV=XGA21x.DRV 6. Change to the OS2\DLL directory and RENAME WINPRF.DLL to WINPRF.XGA 7. Shut down OS/2 and reboot the system. This will not only eliminate the "Green" WINOS2 screen, but will also allow you to use a different resolution for WINOS2 than that used for the OS/2 Presentation Manager. This will work with either the XGA or XGA-2 Adapters, version 2.10 or 2.11 (substitute XGA210 or XGA211 for XGA21x in steps 3 and 5).
