TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION 1. GENERAL ========== This upgrade installs a new operating system onto your handheld. Windows users also receive an update to HotSync(R) Manager on their computer to enable faster HotSync operations. Mac OS users do not require this HotSync update to enable faster synchronization. The upgrade process will backup and restore applications and data in RAM on your handheld automatically. If you use applications such as TRG FlashPro or FlashBuilder to install applications or data into ROM on your handheld, you MUST manually back up this data before upgrading. The upgrade process will overwrite this information when it installs the new operating system. Please see the "Guide to the Palm OS Software 3.3 Upgrade" for detailed information about this upgrade. This document is called "OSUpgrade.pdf" and can be viewed and printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. After the upgrade is complete, this document will be located inside your Palm\Helpnote folder on your hard drive. 2. INSTALLATION FILES ===================== If you install the 3.3 Upgrade from a CD-ROM, use the following list to identify the correct file for your handheld. Close all applications and disable virus protection software before starting the upgrade process. Windows Users: Handheld Model Run this file -------------- ----------------- English WorkPad(R) c3 PC companion "wp33enc3.exe" WorkPad(R) 30X PC companion "wp33en3x.exe" WorkPad(R) 20X PC companion "wp33en2x.exe" German WorkPad(R) c3 PC companion "wp33gec3.exe" WorkPad(R) 30X PC companion "wp33ge3x.exe" WorkPad(R) 20X PC companion "wp33ge2x.exe" Users who have earlier handheld model, like the WorkPad 10U, can upgrade ONLY IF you have installed the 2MB upgrade card that installs Palm OS software version 3.0. Without this upgrade card you cannot install the 3.3 Upgrade of Palm OS software. Please note that pager cards are incompatible with this upgrade! 3. PAGER CARDS ============== Pager cards (such as the Synapse Pager Card) are NOT compatible with this upgrade. If you attempt upgrade a handheld that has a pager card installed, the upgrade utility will warn you that you cannot proceed. Contact the manufacturer of the pager card to determine if they plan to provide an upgrade to Palm OS 3.3 software. 4. TROUBLESHOOTING INFRARED (IR) CONNECTIONS ============================================ WorkPad organizers support infrared (IR) synchronization with IR- equipped computers. Desktop computers are likely to require an infrared device attached to a physical serial port. Laptops are likely to have a built-in IR port, so no external device is necessary. Your computer must also have an installed infrared driver. In some cases (particularly with Windows 98), the WorkPad device will display a dialog with the message "Waiting for Sender..." whenever it is placed near the computer's IR port. To clear the message, simply tap on the Cancel button. Making IR HotSync work can be troublesome in certain cases. Read through the following suggestions for help. Guide to the Palm OS Software 3.3 Upgrade ----------------------------------------- Refer to the guide provided with this upgrade (in electronic format). It is a file called "osupgrade.pdf" and is placed in your Palm\Helpnote directory after the upgrade is complete. It is also available for download from our support site (filename is wpos33ur.pdf). The section titled "IR HotSync Operations" describes in excellent detail how to configure both the handheld and computer for IR operation. Palm Computing Web Site ----------------------- Refer to the Support section of the Palm Computing web site (http://www.palm.com/support) for additional help and the latest information about IR communications. IrDA Organization ----------------- The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) manages the IR communication standards. Their web site has some useful information about making IR communication work on laptop computers. The web site is http://www.irda.org. Select "Using IrDA", then "Help for Notebooks." 5. EURO FONT SUPPORT ==================== If a message appeared during installation indicating that euro- enabled fonts were not found on your computer, you should update your system fonts. If you did not see this message, your computer supports the euro symbol; you can skip the rest of the information in this section. Your WorkPad organizer includes built-in support for the new euro currency symbol. When you perform a HotSync operation, the euro symbol is transferred to your Desktop application like any other piece of data on your organizer. The symbol shows up in your Desktop application, however, only if you are using the fonts that support the symbol. These fonts do not reside with your Desktop application, and they are not produced by Palm Computing; rather, they are part of the operating system of your desktop computer. Windows Users If you are using Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, you can download free font upgrades that support the euro symbol from the Web. For more information, visit the following web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/euro.asp Note that if you have enabled special accessibility options under Windows 95, the euro font upgrade offered by Microsoft is incompatible with these options. In some cases you may still be able to use the euro symbol on your computer. Contact Microsoft for more information. Microsoft Windows 98 supports the euro and has all the necessary fonts and built-in drivers to use the symbol. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 users should use Service Pack 4 or later to ensure proper euro currency symbol support with the Palm Expense application. Printing the euro symbol Even with operating system support, problems may arise while printing the euro symbol if built-in printer fonts do not support the symbol. When a font is present on both the printer and the computer, the font in the printer will be used by default to increase printing speed. If the printer font is not updated to include the euro, a box will be printed instead of the euro symbol. Applications can work around this problem by sending a bitmapped image of the euro to the printer, or by not using the printer's built-in fonts (if allowed). Microsoft recommends that users discuss these issues with their printer vendors. 6. GAMES ======== This upgrade includes updated versions of Subhunt and Hardball. If you use these games, please delete the older versions and install the new versions onto your handheld. If you use the older version (3.0), you may see the euro symbol appear in the score. Windows Users The desktop updater will place updated versions of Subhunt and Hardball in your add-on directory. Use the Install Tool to add the new versions to your handheld. 7. SYNCHRONIZING WITH MULTIPLE COMPUTERS ======================================== Windows Users If you synchronize your handheld with multiple Windows-based PCs, we strongly recommend that you update ALL the PCs with the HotSync updater section of the 3.3 Upgrade install program. This will ensure that all features of the 3.3 Upgrade are enabled in all locations. When you update your additional PCs, however, there's no need to run the second section of the install program, which upgrades your handheld. To stop the install program after you run the HotSync updater section, do the following: Uncheck the box that asks if you want to proceed with the Upgrade Utility (the second half of the upgrade process). 8. UPGRADING MULTIPLE HANDHELDS =============================== To upgrade additional handhelds (of the same model) using one computer, simply re-run the file you downloaded from the web. Example: To upgrade multiple WorkPad c3organizers, run "wp33enc3.exe" for each handheld. To upgrade multiple handhelds (different models), run the file associated with the model you want to upgrade. This may require that you download multiple upgrades from the web site. Example: For a WorkPad 20X organizer, run wp33en2x.exe For a WorkPad 30X organizer, run wp33en3x.exe 9. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING ========================== During the upgrade process, the screen on your handheld will appear strange - it may appear to have "snow" on it similar to that on a television with poor reception. This is expected and normal. If you remove your handheld from the cradle while is it being upgraded, an error message appears on your computer saying that the upgrade process has been interrupted. This is because the upgrade process is incomplete. Earlier in the process, however, you were prompted to perform a HotSync (R) operation, so your data and applications are backed up on your computer. If you receive such a message during the upgrade, do the following: A. Put your handheld back in the cradle and confirm that the cradle is securely connected to your computer. B. Follow the onscreen instructions on your computer. These instructions take you through corrective actions that complete the upgrade process. If this does not solve the problem and your handheld screen looks odd (the "snow" effect), exit the install program and put your handheld into debug mode by doing the following: 1. Press and hold down the DOWN scroll button on the front of your handheld. 2. Using the reset tool in the stylus or an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), press and release the small Reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld. 3. Continue pressing the DOWN scroll button for several seconds. 4. Release the scroll button. Your handheld should have a very small, blinking square in the upper-left corner of the screen. If not, try steps 1- 4 again. 5. Place the unit back into the cradle. 6. Start the Upgrade Utility again. The file will be in your Palm directory on your hard drive and is named "Upgrade_Utility." 7. The Upgrade Utility will detect that your handheld is in debug mode. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the upgrade and restore your data. If you are still unable to upgrade your handheld, please contact Customer Support. 10. KNOWN ISSUES ================= For the latest information on known issues with this upgrade, please visit the palm web site at www.palm.com. BEFORE UPGRADING Hack Master/Hacks As a precaution, disable any system hacks before upgrading. LauncherIII v. 1.42 Before upgrading, uncheck the 'always use Launcher III' option. If this option is checked, you may receive a 'fatal error' warning. If you get this error AFTER upgrading, you may need to: 1. Uncheck the option, if possible. 2. Move LauncherIII out of your Palm\Backup directory on your computer. 3. Perform a 'hard reset' by holding down the power button while you press and release the reset button on the back of your handheld. When prompted to 'erase all data' pick 'Yes'. 4. Perform a HotSync to restore your data. Launcher III will not be restored, since you previously moved it out of the backup directory. Users should contact the developer for an updated application. TimePALm 1.0 This version is incompatible with this upgrade. Users may see a fatal error 'NotifyMgr.c,Line:846,error writing task' message on their handheld after performing a HotSync operation. Removing the TimePALm conduit will eliminate this error. TRG FlashPro v. 1.05 Users should contact TRG for an updated version. As noted previously, any applications installed into ROM should be backed up before the upgrade. TRG FlashBuilder III This application is incompatible with Palm OS 3.3 software. Please contact TRG for guidance. AFTER UPGRADING Palm OS Patches restored? If previous patches (such as the 3.1.1 patch) are restored to your handheld after the upgrade, you can delete them. Normally they will not be restored unless you have used another application such as BackUpBuddy or PalmBuddy to turn on their backup bits. You may also remove the following two items if they are restored to your handheld - they are no longer necessary with version 3.3 of the operating system: SerIrComm_Library.PRC PADHTAL_Library.PRC Password Not Restored? Your password will not be automatically restored to your device after the upgrade. You will need to enter it again. Image Viewer III You should upgrade to version 3.2 or higher. 11.
