Mwave 28.8 and MSMail remote client This MSMail fix is for users of the TP7xx with the DSP modem using Mwave v2.0 or higher It WILL NOT work if applied to other systems and users may experience problems with Microsoft MSMail Remote. Following is a short study into apparent incompatibilities between Microsoft Mail Windows Remote Client v3.x and the DSP Mwave modem as shipped in the IBM ThinkPad 7xx series When a user attempts to use Microsoft Mail Windows Remote Client v3.x on an IBM ThinkPad with the Mwave modem installed, the installation will complete normally. When the user attempts to connect to the postoffice to send/receive mail, the software will appear to hang with the message 'Initializing modem...' Apply the following fix to eliminate the problem: Obtain the MWMSM28.EXE (self extracting) file from the IBM BBS (1-919-517-0001). 1. Execute the MSMMWAVE.EXE file and follow the instructions displayed on the terminal. This will create the following files: IBMMWAVE.SCR Compiled MSMail modem file IBMMWAVE.MDM Source file for the compiled MDM file. If necessary your system administrator can modify this file and recompile for you MWMSM28.TXT Text version of this document README.TXT Important information customers should be aware of. 2. Copy the IBMMWAVE.SCR file to c:\windows\msmail\msrmt\glb. This script file contains the standard modem setup strings used by the External, Transmit and Listen programs. There are five procedures defined in this script file for setting up the modem and for connecting to a remote External machine. The modem setup strings used here will be adequate for most people but there may be some changes required if you are dialing overseas and require a longer wait for Carrier Detect (S7 register) or if you wish to change the speaker volume. Note that if you used the -Innn option in version 1.0 or 2.0 you will have to modify the S7 register and recompile this script file. The MWAVE.MDM file is the text version of the script file and is included for your Mail Administrator who will have the necessary script compiler required to create a usable IBMMWAVE.SCR file if changes are necessary. For more information regarding modem options consult your modem manual. 3. Edit the MSMAIL.INI file, located in the Windows subdirectory, and add the following line under the [sfsremote] section.: NOTE: the '0' is a zero. EXCLUSIVE=0 NOTE: To establish communications with two modems, both modems must have the appropriate modem script installed. If the customer does not have a script, he should check the Microsoft MSWGA forum on CompuServe, library number 3. NOTE: If the user starts heavy system usage applications such as PageMaker or CorelDraw during a communication session, he may experience loss of carrier. This is no different than any other communication application. At the worst, there is potential of corrupting the file resulting in data loss.
