Description of this diskette --------------------------------- This diskette is to be used with the above specified model IBM ThinkPads ONLY. It CANNOT be used on ANY other model of ThinkPad. It contains certain original files from the pre-loaded operating system and can be used to replace your current ones to resolve configuration problems. The original OS/2 desktop can also be restored using this diskette. This diskette and its contents may not fix all problems, it is simply a back up of those original files. Contact an IBM technical support representative at 1-800-772-2227 if assistance is needed. 2. Restoring the original CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for DOS and OS/2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The original CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for DOS and OS/2 are in the A:\OS2\SYSTEM directory with the extentions .DOS and .OS2. Before replacing your current files, it is advisable to back them up,copy them to a floppy, or rename them. To replace the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS, first ensure that WARP was the operating system that the unit was last booted in and use the following command: COPY A:\OS2\SYSTEM\CONFIG.OS2 C:\CONFIG.SYS followed by the key. To replace the OS/2 AUTOEXEC.BAT, first ensure that WARP was the operating system that the unit was last booted in and use the following command: COPY A:\OS2\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.OS2 C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT followed by the key. To replace the DOS CONFIG.SYS, first ensure that DOS/WINDOWS was the operating system that the unit was last booted in and use the following command: COPY A:\OS2\SYSTEM\CONFIG.DOS C:\CONFIG.SYS followed by the key. To replace the DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT, first ensure that DOS\WINDOWS was the operating system that the unit was last booted in and use the following command: COPY A:\OS2\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.DOS C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT followed by the key. 3. Restoring the original OS/2 Warp desktop --------------------------------------------- The following procedure will restore the original OS/2 desktop for the intended models listed above and should be used for those models ONLY. It will not replace any of the pre-installed software that may have been deleted. If, prior to the OS/2 desktop restore, there were programs and files that had been removed from the hard drive, any OS/2 objects on the restored desktop that correspond to those programs will not function, and such desktop objects should be deleted. IMPORTANT NOTE: Before performing the following procedure, you will need either the OS/2 Utility diskettes or the first three OS/2 Installation diskettes. You must run a CHKDSK before restoring the desktop. To perform a CHKDSK, boot the computer from either the OS/2 Installation diskette or Utility diskette #1 and continue with the next diskette when prompted. The Utility diskettes will boot to an A:\> prompt; if you are using the Installation diskettes, when the blue welcome screen appears, use F3 to get to a command prompt. Insert either OS/2 diskette #2 or Utility diskette #3 and at the A:\> prompt, use the following command: CHKDSK C: /F followed by the key DO NOT change to drive C: before using this command. This will cause OS/2 to lock the drive and fixes cannot be made. If errors are found, run the command again until no errors are found. The restore can only be done while either booted from floppies or booted to a command prompt by hitting the ALT-F1 key combination when the white rectangle with the "OS/2" label appears on boot, and choosing "C" from the recovery menu. Restore the Desktop by using the following commands from the A:\ prompt: C: followed by the key CD\OS2 followed by the key RESTORE A: C:\*.* /S followed by the key Next copy the OS/2 INI files to the C:\OS2 directory with the following commands: COPY A:\OS2\OS2*.INI C:\OS2 followed by the key. It may or may not be necessary to replace the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS when using this procedure. If the machine boots to a black screen, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot the system. When the white rectangle with the "OS/2" label appears on use the Alt-F1 key combination to get to the recovery screen. Choose "V" to set the system back to VGA. If the machine still does not boot, and you created an archive, try restoring it. If problems persist, contact an IBM support representative. 4. Other configuration files. ------------------------------- For configuration problems, this diskette contains other original files from the system in the same directories on the diskette that they would be found on your hard drive. These include windows group files with the .GRP extension and all of the .INI files, such as the WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI. These can be used to resolve many configuration problems. You may want to back up or rename any current configuration files before replacing them with the originals. For example, to replace the current windows SYSTEM.INI with the original, use the following command: COPY A:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI C:\WINDOWS followed by the key. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* NOTE: ** NO WARRANTY ** ANY USE BY YOU OF THE SOFTWARE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
