Flood Pictures Legend: This file describes the pictures you are looking at. They are in numercial and therefore more or less chronological order. The first was taken at about 6:30 the morning of the flood. The last was taken about two or three days later. There was a lot more to take pictures of, but I ran out of memory and power. That said, here are the descriptions. Most of these were taken at the highest resolution my digital camera could support--1.2 Megapixels on its highest quality setting. I have recompressed most of the files, but some are untouched originals. 2254 - The first picture taken about 6:30 in the morning. The water was about two feet deep. 2255 - Later that morning, we decided to find out how deep the water in the street was. 2256 - more of the same #2255 2257 - still more of the same 2258 - Just to give you an idea how much water was actually around...facing east-west. 2259 - more of my younger brother in the kayak 2260 - Finally a good look inside the basement. I took out a window screen and managed to finagle the window open. Then I leaned in and snapped this picture. 2261 - Looking at my desk. You can see what the printer did when the flood hit the computer. 2262 - The first and rather pathetic attempt at draining the street. 2263 - Looking at our two borrowed sump pumps 2264 - more sump pumps 2265 - Looking at some of the flotsam as it moved about the basement. Oddly enough there did seem to be something of a "flow" to the flood water. I would have thought that it would stand still. 2266 - Our pumps were moving water, but there was just too much to get rid of. We could not even keep up with the speed that the water was coming in. 2267 - Looking at how far north the water came up. 2268 - Looking south from the north. 2269 - The power was off to our house so we borrowed electricity from the neighbors so as to run our pumps. You can also see the water we'd pumped out pooling in the driveway. While the east-west street in this picture appears dry, people here had flooding as well. 2270 - More looking at the flooded street 2271 - After a while, my younger brother and I (and his friend) got bored and put the kayak in the basement! This was quite an orchestration. Call us crazy, but we all wanted to know what the other rooms in our basement looked like full of water. We were also looking for other flotsam. 2272 - My brother kayaking the mighty Basement 2273 - More kayaking--trying to get past an obstacle. 2274 - Some of the neighbors pumping gear. They had better luck than we did... 2275 - A sewer truck equipped with a TV camera 2276 - View of the long pump hose from the small red trash pump to a working sewer on another street 2277 - Finally! A real pumper! When this fire truck came in and started pumping that was the first sign of any decrease in the amount of water. This was the first sign of any progress. 2278 - Another attempt at being funny during a very trying time.
